PS4 Cross-Platform Multiplayer Access Provided to All Gamers by Sony

The console gaming experience could be about to get much more open.  People unable to play PS4 video games with their friends on different platforms for a long time. It broke apart the door with a cross-play beta for Fortnite slightly over a year ago, and now it is allowing all developers to utilize cross-platform capabilities.

Over the past year, video games similar to Rocket League, PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, Dauntless, Paladins, Smite and Realm Royale have enabled PS4 cross-play with different consoles. Xbox One, as well as PC gamers, will be now able to face off against their PS4 friends in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare later this month too. Other video games including Disc Jam, EVE: Valkyrie, Final Fantasy XIV, and Street Fighter V let PS4 and PC gamers play those titles with each other.

Sony did not have a splashy announcement about bringing cross-play out of beta; it revealed the information almost as an aside in a Wired story about its cloud gaming ambitions. Numerous different major titles provide cross-play between non-PS4 platforms, notably including Minecraft and Roblox, so it will be fascinating to see which developers embrace Sony’s new-found openness.
